Spend和cost都可以表示“花費”，但在句子中的用法卻不完全相同。spend的主語必須是“人”，賓語可以是錢，精力，時間等，其後用on(for)+名詞或用in(可省略)+動名詞形式，不接不定式。cost可用於表示花時間和金錢，其主語一般是“物”或“事”，表示“費用”、“耗費”，側重於“花費”的代價。
例句如下：He spent a lot of money for this new car.他花了很多錢買了這輛新車。He spends much money on books.他平時將很多錢用在買書上。The book cost him one dollar.這本書用了他一美元。It costs you 12 pounds to go London by ship.乘船到倫敦要用12英磅。Making experiments like this costs much time and labour.做這樣的實驗要花很多錢。
需要注意的是，cost與表示時間的詞連用時，不能與具體時間長度連用，只能與表示抽象概念的時間短語(如some time,much time等)連用。
